  • for students: €600

Prérequis

Residents or diplomats specialized in parasitology, as well as holders of a Master's (MSc), a Doctorate (PhD), or those in post-doctoral positions, play a crucial role in research and advancing knowledge in this field. Scientists, entomologists, and associate researchers, along with veterinarians (DVM), often collaborate to study the complex interactions between parasites and their hosts. They are dedicated to understanding the life cycles of parasites, how they affect human and animal health, and developing effective control strategies. This multidisciplinary team also contributes to training new generations of researchers and improving public health policies.

Programme type

This international One Health-oriented training (all courses will be conducted in English) involves French specialists (CIRAD – IRD – Institut Pasteur) and European experts (Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Bristol University) in the field of medical and veterinary entomology and vector control.

The main topics covered are:

  • insecticide resistance
  • alternative control methods
  • transmission of pathogens
  • principles of laboratory breeding of key species of medical and veterinary interest insects
  • learning the morphological recognition of major genera and species of vectors of medical and veterinary importance
  • aspects of "geopolitics" (= geopolitics applied to tick-borne diseases)

Méthodes et modalités pédagogiques

Conferences are generally offered in the morning in an amphitheater and are open to staff of the ENVT.

Practical work, reserved for the 16 participants of the training, takes place in the afternoon and will cover vector identification, principles of their breeding in an insectarium, and principles of field capture.

Modalités d'évaluation et de suivi

Preparatory work and final examination
The attendees will receive a selection of papers covering the topics that will be developed during the course at least 15 days prior to the beginning of the summer school. The final examination will be made of 10 multiple choice questions and/or short answering questions. A course feedback questionnaire will be given at the beginning of the course to each participant and will be collected at the end of the course.

BL

BEATI ZIEGLER Lorenza

Lorenza Beati (MD, PhD) is a medical entomologist and Professor at the Georgia Southern University, and the curator of the largest tick collection in the world: the U.S. National Tick Collection. Her laboratory research is centered on molecular systematics and population genetics of arthropods vectors of diseases (ticks and sand flies) and of the pathogen they transmit. She leads several research projects involving undergraduate students on population genetics of the Lyme disease vector, Ixodes scapularis, in the United States and on a widespread neotropical tick species, Amblyomma cajennense, which transmits Rocky Mountain spotted fever, on neotropical Lutzomyia species, vectors of Leishmaniasis, and on Amblyomma variegatum, an invading tick species carried from Africa in the Caribbean.

BJ

BERENGER Jean-Michel

Jean-Michel Bérenger is an entomologist specialist of Heteroptera Reduviidae and Cimicidae, corresponding member of the National Museum of Natural History, Paris, France. He is the director of the “Laboratoire Diagnostic Insecte”, where several arthropod vectors are bred. He is involved in urban entomology and is a medical entomologist consultant for the French Army Health service. He has been involved in the control and study of bedbugs for over 15 years, and he participates in regular training and consulting for pest management companies. He went on several missions for studies on Reduviidae and for army investigations in French Guiana and in Africa.

BR

BIRTLES Richard

Prof Birtles began his career with Public Health England, where he obtained his PhD on Bartonella diversity and evolution in 1994 and continued to study bartonella as a Marie Curie Research Fellow in the Unite des Rickettsies, L’Université d’Aix-Marseille then a Wellcome Trust Research Fellow at The University of Bristol. At Bristol, Prof Birtles co-founded the Acarus Laboratory for molecular diagnostics of arthropod-borne infections of veterinary importance, expanding his interests to tick-borne pathogens including Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. In 2001, Prof Birtles joined the academic staff of the University of Liverpool Veterinary School, where his research focused on Bartonella-arthropod interactions, A. phagocytophilum ecology and, as part of a multidisciplinary team, fundamental infectious disease ecology and wild immunology. In 2011, Prof Birtles moved to The University of Salford where, as part of the USALTI research group, he continues to work on infection ecology in the UK (Lyme disease and other zoonoses) and, increasingly, the impact of tick-borne infections on livestock rearing in sub-Saharan Africa. Prof Birtles has now published about 150 papers on his research.

CHANDRE Fabrice

Dr Fabrice Chandre is a medical entomologist from the Institute of Research for Development (IRD), Montpellier, France with more than 25 years research expertise in vector control and genetics of insecticide resistance. He has been the head of the Vector Control Strategies Group in the Infectious Diseases and Vectors: Ecology, Genetics, Evolution and Control Research Unit, and of the WHO Collaborating Center for testing and evaluation of insecticide products for vector control in public health until 2020. He is currently an expert member of the Vector Control Advisory Group of WHO. He currently coordinates the Vectopole Sud, a network of platforms dedicated to research on vectors and pests in Montpellier. He has also contributed to the writing of several guidelines for testing the efficacy of insecticides/repellents and the test procedures for resistance monitoring in mosquitoes. Dr Chandre has led field research programs in Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Benin and published extensively on the characterization of mechanisms of insecticide resistance and their impacts in major vectors of malaria or arboviruses.

CORNELIE Sylvie

Sylvie Cornélie was trained as an immunologist (PhD at the Pasteur Institute of Lille, France – DNA vaccine) and then became interested in the interface between humans and the mosquito vector. She studied the immune response of humans against saliva in the context of malaria in Senegal in order to define a marker of exposure to the bite of this mosquito. She then strengthened her skills in medical entomology and focused on the impact of resistance on the salivary content of mosquito vectors. Finally, Sylvie worked for 6 years on the molecular characterization of resistance mechanisms in mosquitoes, more particularly in cuticular resistance mechanisms in Anopheles gambiae. She currently holds an engineering position, and she is developing molecular tools (ddPCR and qPCR, expression) for monitoring insecticide resistance in natural populations of Anopheles in Africa and methodologies to elucidate resistance mechanisms. She intervened in many technology transfers, especially in Africa, in order to train partners to molecular biology tools for the monitoring and the characterization of insecticide resistance.
